we open for the whole time. We are always willing to open for a special request; you can call to make an appointment at 753.2128. We are always looking for help from the membership/village to help serve as a docent or just to open mu- seum, on any day or hour you choose. It would be nice to have a few folks to help serve an hour or a few. We can ar- range to open the door, if you can serve. Since the move, we have suspended the phone line. Stay tuned on that. In the meantime, email us at: info@ebbettspasshistory.org or 753.2128.

We have many items available for a donated price: books, reprint of the vintage Trail Map, postcards, and now, Monte Wolfe t-shirts!

The summer program at EPHA’s annual summer program during the Music Festival, historian Don De Young updated us on all the information he’s uncovering on Monte Wolfe. Once Don found out Monte’s true identity (as revealed in our 2009 program), he has been able to put together a chronology of Monte’s life. Don left us with great Monte t-shirts available at our museum. And he says his book on Monte is about 90% done.

The program presented on the first Sunday of the Music Festival this summer was our best attended to date. Thank you Don for sharing what you have learned!

You can read more at Don’s website: www.montewolfe.org

We are conducting a special Election by mail-in balloting. This ballot is to permit a change in our By-Laws to allow more directors to serve on our board. The ballot is on the back side of the newsletter. Please take time to fill it in and mail to our PO Box. It also includes a line to vote for a 6th Director at this time. This will save a separate mail ing. The new Director will only be voted in if the change in bylaw vote passes.

The need and ability to allow more Directors on our board will help to facilitate research, office upgrades, and generally gain more hands on assistance to the current board and museum curator. Ellen Hoffman has stepped up to the plate and wants to be involved and serve. Ellen has already put in many hours helping to move the museum, and has begun research on race teams for future Wintersports History programs. She has expressed extreme enthusiasm both to serve on the board and to lend a very experienced hand to the functions of the museum and office duties of the Association.

Eric Jung reports that the Forest Service hosted a meeting in October to discuss the

legal situation with Monte Wolf’s cabin. Despite overwhelming public support for preservation of the cabin, the USFS is

being cautious due to threats of lawsuits by wilderness “fundamentalists” who want the cabin to go away. The USFS has ruled that the matter must go through the full NEPA (National Environmental Protection Act) process, which could take two years. The anti-preservation people have promised to fight, so it’s still appropriate for people to write to Congress- man Lungren’s office in support of preservation. Email to Robert.Ehlert@mail.house.gov. The cabin is ok for now¼.

In 1952, the Orvis family of Farmington purchased 480 acres of property in Bear Valley from the Bishop Company. William and Grace Orvis built a large log cabin and lived in Bear Valley during summer months while their cattle grazed on the lush meadow, an activity that occurs still today. The holdings were logged out in the late 1950s not only to produce revenue but also to protect the area from fire danger and open the tree stands for increased grass production.

The first development occurred in 1955 when the Orvis family subdivided 20 acres on the north side of Highway 4 into 60 lots with roads and water supply. Residential progress largely happened due to the demand by friends and family of the Orvis’.

Bruce Orvis Sr., son of William and Grace, always envisioned a winter sports complex for the area. In 1963 he acquired 400 acres of Forest Service land to the north of the Orvis property through a land exchange. He then put together a ski area package for Mt. Reba under Forest Service permit and promoted a new highway from Camp Connell to the ski area. After years of convincing, road construction began on Highway 4 to access Bear Valley the same year. After he acquired title to the land north of the Highway he developed the 400+ lot subdivision, the Bear Valley Lodge and other installations as we now know them.

At the time, Lodges, condominiums, parking areas, tennis courts and air strip, sewer system and water system, etc. were also developed along with the Mt. Reba Ski Bowl complex. The area opened its lifts to winter visitors in the winter of 1967-1968. By January 1968, there were 125 winter-summer homes in the subdivision and several thousand skiers visited on weekends.
